Recipe FAQs
Yes! Although sweet potatoes do not have as much starch as a regular potato, there is still a good amount. Soaking the sweet potatoes in cold water before air frying them will help remove some of that starch, allowing the chips to cook better and become as crispy as possible in the air fryer. You only need to soak them for about 30 minutes, but you can do longer than that if you have the time!
The purpose of the oil is to coat the sweet potatoes and help them crisp up, so using a high smoke point oil will offer you the best results! We use olive oil for the light and smooth taste, but you can also use avocado oil or sunflower oil.
The biggest reason the sweet potato chips are not crispy is because there was too much moisture while cooking. To ensure you have crispy chips, pat the potatoes dry as much as you can after they soak in water and before seasoning them. Additionally, it’s important to avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket. If you try to cook too many chips at once then the moisture will get trapped and steam the potatoes instead of crisp them. After the potatoes are seasoned, place them in a single layer in the air fryer, and avoid overlapping as much as possible to allow the air to circulate. If you follow these steps, you will be left with crispy sweet potato chips every time!
How to Make Sweet Potato Chips in the Oven

- Cook the potato slices for 20-25 minutes until they are crispy and golden on the edges.

How to Store Sweet Potato Chips
Any leftover sweet potato chips can be stored in an airtight container on the counter for up to 5 days. If you have a large gathering or party coming up, homemade sweet potato chips are the perfect side to bring. Since they save well for a few days, you can make them in advance to save on time!
Expert Tips
- You can either peel the sweet potatoes before slicing them or leave the skins on, whatever you prefer.
- If you’ve made chips before with russet potatoes, be aware that sweet potato chips will not crisp up the same but they will still be delightful.
- Be sure to evenly coat the sweet potatoes in the oil so they cook evenly and become crispy! You can use tongs to toss the ingredients together in a bowl.
- The thinner you slice your sweet potatoes the better they will crisp up and the quicker they will cook! If you have one, it is easiest to use a mandolin for even and thin slices.
- Feel free to add other seasonings if you want a different flavor! You can try garlic powder or chili powder to add more depth to the chips.
