Recipe FAQs
Traditionally, stroganoff is made with beef cubes or strips and sour cream. Over time, people have modified and modernized it to include onions, mushrooms, and other ingredients to add some more dimension of flavor and texture.
I love using ground beef because it’s easy to manipulate and cook in one big pot with everything else, and the consistency is great for everyone to enjoy (especially young ones who may need their meat cut into small pieces).
Because of the meat and sour cream, stroganoff will only be good for 3 to 4 days. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
This is a wonderful dish to prep and freeze for future meals. It thaws out nicely for leftovers when you’re in a pinch for an easy dinner! It will keep best in the freezer for 3 to 4 months.
Expert Tips
- Stroganoff has the simplicity of coming together similar to a casserole, but you get to select what it’s served on—hot cooked egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or a heap of rice all go well with stroganoff.
- This is a great make-ahead meal that will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge or up to 4 months in the freezer.
- I like using ground beef for stroganoff because it’s more affordable and easier for little ones to eat with the smaller pieces.
