    Recipe FAQs

Do I need to cover my Hawaiian rolls while they cook?

Whether or not you cover your sliders while they cook is completely up to you! Since these sliders do not cook for very long, you don’t need to worry about the tops burning if you don’t cover the dish. Leaving your sliders uncovered will give the tops of the rolls a crunchier texture. Likewise, covering the baking dish will give you a softer roll. It is important to note that the overall flavor of the sliders will be the same whether or not you cover them.

What can I use if I don’t have sweet Hawaiian rolls?

If you are in a pinch or can’t find Hawaiian rolls at your grocery store then feel free to use your favorite dinner rolls. While your sliders will not have that subtle note of sweetness, they will still taste amazing. Many major grocery stores sell sheets of dinner rolls in the bakery section.

One of my favorite things about these Hawaiian sliders is how easy and fun they are to customize!  Some of our favorite ways to switch up the flavor of these sliders include:

    • Top the sliders with sauces like mustard, mayonnaise, white bbq sauce, or ranch dressing. Simply spread a little bit of sauce over the bottom sheet of rolls before adding cheese and ham.
    • Load some veggies onto your sliders. Some of our favorites include lettuce, avocado, and onions.
    • Change up the ham and try thinly-sliced deli meats like turkey, seasoned chicken, or roast beef.
    • Customize the flavor of your sliders by replacing the American cheese with provolone, muenster, swiss, havarti, gouda, or sharp cheddar.

    How to Store Your Leftovers

You can store your leftover Hawaiian sliders in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can either cover the baking sheet tightly with plastic wrap or transfer your slides to an airtight container to keep them fresh as long as possible. These slides can be reheated in the microwave for about 30 seconds, or until they are warm and gooey in the middle.

    Expert Tips

    • It can be tricky to find a package of Hawaiian rolls that fit a 9×13 baking dish, so we like to buy the biggest sheet available and then cut it down to size.
    • Using two slices of cheese on either side of the ham helps to hold the sandwich together once the cheese is melted.
    • You can pre-make these sliders to shorten time on the day you are serving.  Just follow the steps but stop before brushing the melted butter on the top.  Cover and refrigerate.  When you are ready to serve, all you have left is brushing the butter on top and baking.

    Notes

    • We had trouble finding a package of Hawaiian rolls that fit our pan, so it is easier to buy the biggest sheet and then cut it down to size.
    • Other toppings you can add to your sliders include mayo, mustard, and tomato.
We like to use two slices of cheese to help hold the sandwiches together once the cheese is melted.
    • Coating your sandwiches in some melted butter gives them a nice crunch and a beautiful golden brown color.
    • Feel free to use your favorite deli meat if ham isn’t your favorite.
    • Other cheeses you can use include sharp cheddar, provolone, and Swiss. Any kind of sliced cheese will work for this recipe.
    • Store your leftover sliders in an airtight container for up to 4 days in the fridge.
    • Alternatively, you can cover the baking pan with plastic wrap or tin foil.
    • Reheat your sliders in the microwave for about 30 seconds, or until they’re warm in the middle.
