Smoothies can be a great meal substitute when you are on the go. With this guide you can whip together three different smoothies that each have their own flavors and benefits. We love creating a version of one of these smoothies depending on the ingredients we have on hand and the flavor profile we want to get from our smoothie.

Not only are these smoothies good for fueling your body, but they taste delicious too, making them great for kids and adults alike. Pretty soon you will be a smoothie expert, and hopefully start to feel the long term health benefits of Superfoods!

Smoothies are kind of my jam and here are a few tried and true recipes you can’t miss: Orange Pineapple Banana Smoothie and Healthy Strawberry Kiwi Smoothie.

Good Smoothie

  • Ripe Fruit—Try to get at least a ratio of half fresh, half frozen fruits of your choice.
  • Cold Liquid—This can be milk, almond milk, or water. To help the ingredients blend.
  • Yogurt OR Raw Nuts—To help thicken the smoothie and add a bit of protein.

Better Smoothie

  • Ripe Fruit—Again, get at least a ratio of half fresh and half frozen fruits.
  • Cold liquid—Milk, almond milk, or water. To help the ingredients blend.
  • Yogurt OR Raw Nuts—To thicken the smoothie and add a bit of protein.
  • Leafy Greens—Baby spinach is a great option if you are new to adding greens!
  • Superfood—One serving.

Best Smoothie

  • Leafy Greens— Spinach and kale are full of nutrients and easy to blend.
  • Banana— Frozen will be the best option to help with the texture of the smoothie.
  • Blueberries— Frozen. The sweetness pairs well with the greens.
  • Almond Milk—Can be replaced with your favorite milk.
  • Raw nuts—For protein. You can use almonds or cashews for easy blending.

Recipe FAQs

What is a superfood?

A superfood is an ingredient that is rich in compounds such as fatty acids, antioxidants, or fiber that is considered beneficial to an individual’s health! They essentially have an abundance of nutrients that your body needs packed into one small ingredient. As you incorporate these into your diet often, there are many long term health benefits like more energy or increasing your immune function. Some of the most popular superfoods you can include in your smoothies are chia seeds, coconut oil, hemp seed hearts, flax seed, spirulina powder, or cacao nibs.

Should my smoothie be a certain consistency?

Smoothies are typically thicker than juice, but not too thick that it is difficult to drink. The texture is usually smooth with everything well blended. But, ultimately it is up to you and what you want! If the smoothie is thicker than you desire, you can add an extra splash of milk, water or juice and blend it some more to thin it out a little bit. If the smoothie is too thin, try adding some more frozen fruit, yogurt, or avocado to help thicken it.

How to Serve and Store Good, Better, Best Smoothies

I love to make smoothies for breakfast because they are a great way to start out your day! You can also serve them as a snack in between meals. Smoothies pair well with toast, oatmeal, or eggs if you want to serve them alongside another dish.

Expert Tips

  • I tend to not add ingredients such as carrots, beets, or other veggies to my smoothies because it changes the texture and can overpower the flavor. Save those types of veggies for juicing, and stick with leafy greens for your smoothies
  • Try not to add ice to your smoothies! It might seem tempting to help thicken them up, but it will just create chunks and become unpleasant to drink. Using frozen fruit helps so much with improving the texture.
  • You can try a variety of different fruit, greens, protein, and superfoods to figure out what you like best! The combinations are endless.
  • To determine a serving of your Superfood, read the label on the package. Some will have a serving size as just a teaspoon whereas others will be a tablespoon.

Instructions

  • Choose a smoothie and then place everything in the blender for that particular smoothie and blend until smooth. If the smoothie is thicker than you like or not blending well add a splash of liquid and blend again until the desired consistency.
  • The goal with this smoothie is to have a lot of sweet fruit, some of which is frozen because that really improves the texture of the smoothie, some protein, and a liquid base. Try out different combos until you find what you like. The combinations are literally endless!

Notes

To determine a serving of Superfood, read the label on their packaging. (You only need to add 1 teaspoon of spirula compared to a tablespoons of chia). Reference the post for more information on Superfood recommendations.
I don’t add things like carrots, beets, or other veggies to my smoothies. I’ve tried it and it’s pretty gross and the texture is all off. Save those kinds of veggies for juicing (a whole different thing) and stick with the leafy greens when it comes to smoothies.
