My go-to easy apple pie recipe uses fresh apples in a homemade crust with little added sugar. It’s so simple and delicious. I’m sure you will love it!

Easy Apple Pie Recipe | Classic Apple Dessert Recipe For Thanksgiving.

A simple apple pie recipe is easy, and the results are just plain tasty. It’s a recipe that everyone should have in their collection. This apple pie doesn’t use a lot of added sugar, and you don’t have to cook the apples before adding them to the crust.

This pie has about an inch or inch-and-a-half of sliced apples inside the crust, which I think is a nice amount. Apple pies that are 3 or 4 inches high and stuffed with apples are gorgeous, but I like a more even crust-to-apple ratio myself.

Pro Tip! When you don’t have that many apples in the crust, you don’t have to precook the apples. (If you’re a pie fan, I have lots of delicious pie recipes to choose from, too.)

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • A Winner Pie Flavor: Homemade apple pie is a true classic, and you can rest assured this really is the best apple pie recipe!
  • Great for New Bakers: This recipe is so simple that even the most basic cook can master it the first time. You can use any fresh apples you have and any crust you like. It’s so easy you’ll be making it every night for dinner.
  • Classic Dessert: There’s something magical about pulling a pie made from scratch out of the oven. It takes you back to when life was simpler and homemade pie was standard fare in American kitchens. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to the dish, and you’ll be a hero!
  • Pie for Breakfast: Kids LOVE apple pie for breakfast, so if I don’t have too much left, I’ll just store it covered on the counter to be eaten the next morning. Sugar is a great preservative, so I have no issues leaving it out overnight.

Recipe FAQs

What’s a good recipe for making homemade pie crust?

I wrote a huge post all about easy homemade pie crustThis basic apple pie recipe is a staple in our house, and I hope you love it. If you want something perfect for your Thanksgiving table, you can find this recipe plus SEVEN other pie recipes in one post.

How many apples do you need for apple pie?

To make this apple pie, you need 10 medium-sized apples. It has a great apple pie filling-to-crust ratio (not too many apples, but not too few). Once the apples are sliced, you’ll need about 5 cups of apples in total.

Can I use a store-bought pie crust?

A packaged store-bought pie crust will work fine if you don’t want to make a perfect pie crust recipe at home. Brush the top with one egg white mixed with one tablespoon of water and sprinkle it with sugar (extra chubby or sparkling sugar is really fun if you have it!).

two pie crust dough balls.

Expert Tips

  • Best Apples: Try to find a firm apple to use in this recipe. I like a mix of sweet and sour apples. Apple varieties you can use include: Granny Smith, Jonathan, Jonagold, Winesap, Golden Delicious, Honey Crisp, Gala, or Rome Beauty. I used a mix between Golden Delicious and some kind of tart firm apples from our trees for this pie, and it was great. It’s very forgiving, so experiment!
  • Extra Pie Crust: If the pie dough is oversized for your pie dish, trim away the excess dough with a sharp knife
  • Pretty Presentation: If you want to serve a pretty slice of pie (and not have some of the fruit ooze out onto the pie plate after removing a slice), let it cool to room temperature before serving.
  • Storing Leftovers: If you have leftovers you can store them covered in the fridge for up to 5 days. The crust gets a little soft when it sits, but I like to heat up a slice in the microwave before eating it.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven temperature to 450. In a medium bowl add the sliced apples. Sprinkle with the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt and toss gently to combine well.
  • Roll out and place an unbaked pie crust in the bottom of a deep 9-inch pie dish.
  • Place the apple mixture in the unbaked pie shell. Place the small pieces of butter on top of apple mixture.
  • Top with the second pie crust and trim the edges of the crust if needed. Crimp the edges and cut a few slits in the top crust for steam vents.
  • Mix the egg white and 1 tablespoon of water together in a small bowl to create the egg wash, and then brush the top with the mixture and sprinkle with sugar before baking.
  • Bake at 450℉ for the first 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350℉  and continue cooking for an additional 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  • If the edge of the crust starts to brown more quickly than the center, carefully cover the edge with aluminum foil for the last 15-20 minutes of baking to prevent over-browning.
  • Let the pie cool for 10 minutes before serving. Can be made ahead of time and served at room temperature.

Notes

  • This apple pie has about an inch or inch-and-a-half of sliced apples inside the crust, which means you don’t have to pre-cook them and they won’t shrink too much.
  • Cut the apples slices about ¼-inch thick.
  • This apple pie is a great candidate for a pretty lattice crust
  • In the world of pies, this one has a very small amount of added sugar. If you are using tart apples, you might need to double the amount of sugar. Just taste and see. Feel free to add up to 1/3 cup of sugar to this recipe.

    Hi!
I made apple pie! Was good
But witch rack do you cook it?
Down rack alone or in middle a the way true cooking?
And the stuffing apple was more between puree in side? I did cute my apple in slices! And we do need to hade Shortening and also butter?
But was still very good 🙂

    1. Melissa says:

I like a butter and margarine crust but you don’t have to use that recipe if you don’t want. It has a nice flavor and the texture is easy to work with. I bake it in the center of the middle rack.

  5. Therese says:

This pie is easy to make and tastes great. Not sure why some people were confused on the directions. I have made it several times. I like that there are very few ingredients and not a lot of sugar. Do you have a similar recipe for peach pie using frozen peaches?

    1. Melissa says:

I don’t but I’ll add it to my recipe list, thank you for the suggestion and I’m so glad you like this pie as much as we do!

  6. Kat says:

Hi, can you make this recipe the head of time and freeze and bake the day of?

    1. Melissa says:

Yes, I thaw it before baking in the fridge overnight. You can also bake it fully, freeze it, and reheat. Both work great.

This apple pie was so easy to make and tasted so good 😊 I really recommended it!!

    1. Destiny says:

I have 2 shallow 9” pie pan. Could I make the recipe as written and make two pies out of them (the filling)?

    2. Melissa says:

You can just try it in your pan… it’s not so messy (like a pumpkin pie with a really wet filling) that you can’t just make it fit or you can divide it if that’s easier for you.

    3. Melissa says:

You have some flexibility here since the filling isn’t a really wet filling like pumpkin pie filling or something. You can squish it in a shallow pan, it should work fine or you can divide it if that feels easier for you. It’s kind of up to you, I’d probably just make it fit the pan you have. It should work out fine still.

  8. Jane says:

Completely agree with Randy. This recipe has THREE different cook times between the two recipes listed and in the video. Consistency and accuracy is too important when baking.

    1. Melissa says:

Two recipes? I’m not sure what you are talking about, the recipe is very clear but it does have a beginning temperature and then a lower baking temperature part way through cooking, that’s common for pie baking.

  9. Melissa says:

I have no idea what you are talking about. The #1 instruction is “In a medium bowl add the sliced apples. Sprinkle with the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt and toss gently to combine well.” and the egg white is listed right under the pie crust in the ingredients list… don’t leave star ratings for recipes you haven’t even tried please.

Oh man, this was legit the easiest, but hands down the most delicious homemade apple pie I’ve ever eaten. This was also my first time even making a pie! I was shook! LoL. I would highly recommend anyone to make this. It’s so yummy!
