Recipe FAQs

Do I need to cook the bacon beforehand?

Nope! Using raw bacon will allow you to wrap the shrimp with no issues. However, you should use fully cooked shrimp for this recipe, because it will make it easier to prepare the appetizer since you don’t have to worry about both the bacon and shrimp reaching a certain temperature at the same time.

How can I keep the bacon from falling off the shrimp?

The bacon should be able to wrap around the shrimp and overlap on itself a little bit. Place the shrimp face down on the rack to prevent the bacon from unwrapping or falling off. If you are concerned or are having issues, you can stick a single toothpick in each shrimp while cooking to keep the bacon on, then take it out before serving.

Can I make this in the air fryer?

Definitely! If you want to cook this bacon wrapped shrimp in the air fryer, allow the shrimp to thaw and then wrap half a slice of bacon around the shrimp. Place the shrimp in the air fryer basket. Cook the shrimp at 370°F for 7-9 minutes or until the bacon is done cooking. Serve and enjoy!

Should I take the tails off the shrimp before cooking?

No, it’s not necessary to take the tails off before cooking. As you are wrapping the shrimp, try to avoid wrapping bacon on the tail to make it easier to eat once it is done cooking. You can remove the tails if you want, but leaving them on is not a problem.

How to Serve and Store Bacon Wrapped Shrimp

Bacon wrapped shrimp makes for the perfect appetizer. You can serve it before any meal such as steak and baked potatoes, or easy lasagna roll-ups. This shrimp tastes amazing paired with a dipping sauce! You can use remoulade sauce or guacamole for extra flavor.

If you have any leftovers, you can store this shrimp in the fridge for up to 2 days. Once you are ready to enjoy it again, simply reheat your shrimp in the oven for 10 minutes at 300°F. This method will reheat the shrimp nicely and ensure your bacon stays crispy.

Expert Tips

  • While I typically use medium sized shrimp, you can also use large or jumbo shrimp if that is all you can find.
  • You can use cooked fresh or frozen shrimp. If you are using frozen shrimp, follow the package instructions for thawing the shrimp before wrapping them with bacon.
  • Using the wire rack on top of a baking sheet will allow for the grease from the bacon to drip down without having the shrimp sit in the grease as it cooks.
  • The zesty flavor from the fresh lemon adds a nice contrast to the savoriness of the bacon. You can also sprinkle the shrimp with bottled lemon juice if that’s all you have.
  • Both the shrimp and bacon bring plenty of flavor to the table, so I like to omit any extra seasoning. However, you can toss your shrimp in salt and pepper or use your favorite seafood seasoning if you want to include a different flavor profile.
