Instant Pot Split Pea Soup Recipe with Ham
Long live all the easy Instant Pot recipes! I’m so excited to share this Instant Pot Split Pea Soup recipe with you today because it’s one of my favorite soups, done in the pressure cooker, and it only takes about 40 minutes to get on the table. It’s full of veggies, is really inexpensive to make, and is hearty and full of flavor. I feel like split pea soup gets a bad rap because of it’s thick texture and green color, but I’m here to tell you that it is awesome! It tastes just like other ham and bean recipes but takes a fraction of the time. Today I’m working with Hurst’s Beans again (love them!) with their split peas. Split peas are one of those hidden gems that not enough folks are using. I love them because they are high in protein and fiber and have all kinds of vitamins and minerals. They are also fun to work with because they break down when cooked, meaning you don’t have to process anything in the blender or food processor to get a smooth soup. The only chunks in this soup are the veggies and a little bit of ham. The split peas just make everything thick and creamy.
Homemade Gluten-Free Bean Soup
Here’s why I’m excited to be working with Hurst’s Beans today. Hurst’s is a 4th generation family-owned company that is based out of Indiana (I was raised in Indiana and consider myself a Hoosier through and through), and they’ve been a brand that has been in my cupboard, my mom’s cupboard, and my grandma’s cupboard for years and years. I grew up loving the 15 Bean Soup Mix, and their products are ones I use and know well. I’m so excited to be working with them today. They grow their beans in the US and Canada (yay!), and the flavor packets really are just seasonings in a convenient little package. They are gluten-free and vegan and have no added MSG. This is a great brand, and I can’t wait for you to bring them into your own kitchen if you haven’t already.
Other recipes that I’ve made using Hurst’s Beans include Slow Cooker Refried Beans, Instant Pot Vegetarian Chili, and Instant Pot Slow Cooker Cajun Beans and Rice. All of which I think you should make. 🙂
Instant Pot Split Pea Soup Tips and Tricks:
- The soup will thicken a lot as it cools, so serve it hot or thin it out with some broth as needed.
- I tried this recipe with and without the included seasoning packet and I really liked using the seasoning packet. It adds a great smoky flavor. It’s gluten-free too. If you are sensitive to salt though, try adding only half and adjusting additional salt to your liking.
- You are free to use the pork/ham product of your choice – using a leftover ham bone works great. I just toss my ham bone in a zipper-topped freezer bag after dinner and keep it in there until I’m ready to make soup.
- Feel free to leave out the meat if you are looking for a meatless meal, but if you do that, be sure to add the seasoning packet for that smoky flavor. You can make this vegan by using olive oil instead of the butter and omitting the meat. Easy! It’s also gluten-free as long as your meat is.
- I love this recipe with a side of my forever favorite cornbread. Sweet cornbread and smoky ham and split pea soup is so very good together.
- You can make this on the stove top by cooking it for about 40 minutes until tender or in the slow cooker on low for about 4 hours.

Instant Pot Split Pea Soup
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
- 1 large onion, diced
- 3 ribs celery, diced
- 3-4 carrots, diced
- 1 bag Hurst’s Hampeas Green Split Peas, 20 ounces, rinsed and sorted
- Seasoning packet that comes with split peas
- 8 cups broth, chicken or vegetable is best
- 2 pounds ham hocks, shanks, or leftover ham bone
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Select browning/saute to preheat the pressure cooker. Add the olive oil or butter and onion, celery, and carrots. Saute until the onion is tender, about 3 minutes.
- Add split peas to the pot, add the seasoning packet, and the broth. Stir to combine.
- Add the ham hocks, shanks, or ham bone to the pot.
- Lock the lid in place, make sure the vent is set to seal, and select high pressure and 20 minute cook time.
- When the cooking time ends, use the quick pressure release. When the valve drops, remove the lid carefully.
- Remove the ham pieces and bones and place them on a plate. Remove any extra meat and discard the non-edible pieces. Return the ham meat to the pot and stir to combine.
- Adjust salt and pepper to taste and serve hot.

This was an amazingly easy and tasty soup. This recipe is a keeper!!
It’s such an underrated soup! I’m so glad you made it too because it is one of my favorites!
Can this recipe be doubled in an 8 quart pressure cooker? I like to make extra to freeze as individual servings.
I have yes.
Wonderful recipe as written. I used a frozen ham bone from Easter. Super, super easy to make in the pressure cooker. Serving it with garlic bread. Thanks!
The recipe says add seasoning packet before pressure cooking & video adds it after pressure cooking…which one?
You can do either one! I’ll normally add it after now though as I find the pressure cooker can diminish the flavor of spices.
Hi Melissa I like your name. My question is in the video you do not add the seasoning till after you cook everything and then in your recipe it says to add it with everything so what is the right answer Thank you Missy (Melissa)
You can do either! Sometimes I think the Instant Pot blows out the seasoning and so I’ll either add all or half of it after I cook the dish, just to avoid that. Feel free to play around with it and see, both ways work well.
