Sugar cream pie is a custard pie that has a simple filling made of sugar, flour, cream, salt, and vanilla. The unique thing about this pie is that it’s made without eggs. The result is a rich and creamy dessert that can be topped with any kind of simple garnish. This dessert first originated in Indiana in the early 1800s, which is where it got the nickname “Hoosier Pie”. Recipe FAQs

Should I use homemade pie crust?

It is completely up to you! If you have the time to make a homemade pie crust, then go for it. The pie crust does not have to be fancy, you can even make a simple crust out of flour, salt, milk, and oil. If you want to save a bit of time, then a store bought pie crust will work just as well! Either way your pie will taste great, it just depends on how much time you have on your hands.

How can I tell when the pie is done?

Since sugar cream pie has a naturally light color, it can be difficult to know when it is ready. But, when the pie is done cooking you will notice the edges of the crust are golden brown and the filling will be bubbling just a little. It is important to note that the filling will not be fully set when you take it out of the oven, but as it cools it will become more solid. Be careful not to over cook the pie as you do not want it to burn, so start with an hour and then go from there!

How to Serve and Store Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie

This hoosier sugar cream pie can be served as a tasty dessert or a quick snack! There is never a bad time to eat this delicious pie. Most people serve this pie on its own, but if you want to spice up your presentation or flavors, you can add a simple garnish to the pie! Some good options are whipped cream, chopped fresh fruit, or a sprinkle of cinnamon for some extra flavor.

Any leftovers of this sugar cream pie need to be stored in the fridge. You can either wrap the pie plate tightly with plastic wrap, or transfer the pie to an airtight container. It will stay fresh in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Expert Tips

  • Be sure to allow the pie to completely cool before serving. This will ensure it sets in the middle and doesn’t fall apart as you try to cut it.
  • You will want your slices of butter to be cold, right out of the fridge. This will help them melt at a good speed and evenly over the top of the pie!
  • Place the pie plate on a cookie sheet to make transferring it in and out of the oven a breeze!
  • Feel free to use store bought or homemade pie dough! We usually use a store bought pie crust since it cuts down on prep time.

    1. Your grandma is beautiful. I think all grandmas are beautiful! 2. That pie sounds heavenly. We always have custard pie at Thanksgiving – this is seems like a decked out version of that. YUM! 3. Pretty pies are overrated. I make Ugly Apple Pie (no joke, that’s what we call it) throughout the fall. I have never mastered a pretty pie crust. I can’t do it. But the pie is delicious! Just like with people – it’s what ‘s on the inside that counts!
