Recipe FAQs

Do my strawberries need to be frozen?

I always prefer using frozen strawberries in my smoothies since it helps give them a thicker texture; however, you are more than welcome to use whatever you have on hand already. If you like a thinner smoothie then fresh strawberries will work great. You can also use frozen kiwi and frozen bananas.

How can I make my smoothie thicker?

If you are already using frozen fruit and want your smoothie to be even thicker then try adding some ice to the blender. You can also add a scoop or two of your favorite protein powder. For a creamier texture you can add half of an avocado. The natural oil in the avocado will give your smoothie a thick, creamy texture without changing the flavor too much.

Can I store my smoothies?

These smoothies are best served fresh. Luckily it is easy to make a single serving or a large batch for a crowd, but I try to avoid making more than I will eat since it is hard to store any leftover smoothie.

  • Add some protein—Throw in a scoop of your favorite protein powder. We usually stick to a vanilla or fruit flavored protein powder, but feel free to get creative! This will make your smoothies even more filling and give you an extra boost of energy.
  • Load in extra fruit—There is a wide variety of fruit that pairs well with strawberry and kiwi. Some of our favorite fruits to add to either layer include pineapple, honeycrisp apples, and mango. You can also add cherries or raspberries to the strawberry layer.
  • Throw in more veggies—Don’t be afraid to sneak in some extra veggies. The strong flavor of the fruit will disguise the flavor of any veggies you add. Kale is a great veggie to add. You can also grab a bag of powdered power greens at most major grocery stores.

Expert Tips

  • Feel free to use any combination of fresh and frozen fruit in this recipe. The more frozen fruit you use the thicker your smoothie is going to be.
  • For a thinner smoothie, add some extra milk or a few tablespoons of water.
  • In addition to using baby spinach, you can also use kale or powdered power greens.
  • The riper your bananas are, the more flavor they will provide and the easier they will blend into the smoothie.

Looks yummy! I was hoping to make this to serve in little shot glasses (40ml) minus the strawberry bit! Am trying to work out by how many I need to multiply your recipe to serve about 20-25.
How big are the glasses you use in your recipe to serve the 2-4??

I’d make it a time or two get the sizes down… it’s been a long time since I made this and I just can’t remember. I assume it makes about 4 total cups but I really can’t be sure. Let me know how that turns out! It sounds so cute!
