Our Biggest Mess: Stuff We’ve Found in the Walls

Thomas got a hankerin’ to tear something out the other day and he did just that. The mudroom/our current bathroom had a 6 foot 6 inch tall dropped ceiling of horribly ugly white cardboard tiles. The dropped ceiling went to the top of this door and above it was empty space and then another ceiling (the dark wood you can see). Isn’t that older ceiling beautiful? It’s too damaged to save, but we sure did think about it.

The ceiling follows the curve of the roof and is 9 feet on the left of the picture and drops down to 6 feet 6 inches. The ceiling that he removed was right on top of the thin white trim that you can see in the middle of the picture. Why would you ever choose to have ceilings that short?! It’s beyond me! I think we might even keep the slant in the ceiling because it’s fun. The white box is the shower that we use, awesome right?

I’ll be honest. I didn’t really want him to take the ceiling down yet. Demolition is such a mess and I wasn’t in the mood to deal with it. It obviously happened regardless, but a few hidden treasures made the day happier.

Thomas pulled this adorable immunization record out of the hole. The past owner’s son’s name and birthday are on the card (but I blurred those out.Take that creeper/identity thieves). A little piece of the past.

In Utah (and other states I assume) you can buy a tree tag for a small fee that allows you to go on the mountain and cut down your own Christmas tree. I think this is an old tree tag for a Christmas tree.

A great photo. Anyone know who this is? We sure don’t.

Anyone know who this is? Obviously damaged, but still great. These pictures are small, wallet-size, and I assume they were school pictures.

We also found a lovely pair of stained pink swim trunks. Odd.

And what do you think this holds? Guesses? Anyone?

Some kind of down feathers! A little creepy but very soft. I am thinking they might be turkey down since we found this during a different demolition stage.

Fun! And I thought we had found all of the treasure that there were. A small part of me is excited to tear out the other half of our house even though the rest of me is dreading it. I’m still holding out that we will find something like a million dollar gold coin. Now that is something I could use!
